Mayan Revival Style

"Mayan Revival Style" is a modern movement in the history of Architecture, and as its name suggests, it's the revival of the Mayan culture (Mexico/Central America indigenous, pre-columbian). The "Mayan Revival" style blends the Mayan culture and artistic motifs, alongside with those of other Mesoamerican cultures, and incorporating this revivalist style into modernist architecture. Below are a few examples of "Mayan Revival" works:

Frank Lloyd Wright - Imperial Hotel

Designed between 1913-1922, the Imperial Hotel was designed for the Imperial family, intended to replace the old Imperial Hotel, which had a wooden structure. The Imperial Hotel was Lloyd's most famous work in Japan, designed in the "Maya Revival Style" of architecture, the hotel incorporates a tall, pyramid-like structure; there are elements in the architectural structure which resemble characteristics of design movements. For example, the symmetrical design and the use of external culture (Mayans) is quite typical of Modernism, and the frequent use of geometrical forms and structuring resembles that of the Art Deco movement.

Wright's design and style was undoubtedly influenced by Louis H. Sullivan, whom employed Wright to work in the Adler and Sullivan studio. Below is an example of Sullivan's work:

Sullivan and Wright's design principles were very similar, the use of geometrical shapes and form decorated with organic symbolism and ornamentation. As he was a formal theorist on aesthetics, he proposed that architecture should exhibit the spirit of the time and the needs of the people, form should always follow function, however, his designs and philosophy went beyond the functional and structural aspect, and became expressionistic as well.

As for people influenced by Wright, Walter Burley Griffin was one of the notable architects to emerge from Wright's studio. Below is one of the many famous Griffin works:

The use of geometrical forms for the design, and the incorporation of local and organic materials was influenced by Sullivan's and Wright's works, following the principle of designing functional-based geometrical forms and blending its existence into its environment.

Packard Bell Laptop Package

This is the package for a Hewitt Packard laptop that i got midyear, it obviously falls under the category of Packaging > Products. Personally i like the use of brown and pale colours, usually with other laptop packages you get the typical white cardboard box with a picture of the laptop on the front in bright colours. The brown and white contrasts the the usual formal look of laptop packagings, the graphics such as the florals and such makes the overall packaging look quite fancy and elegant, while simple and subtle. The typeface on the back is quite casual and playful, not your typical Times New Roman or Helvetica information stickers on other laptop boxes.

The Killers - Album Art

Album CD cover art for a band named 'The Killers'. Falls under the category of Packaging > CDs. While the cover for 'Sawdust' is pretty simple and common (besides the log-arm), what i like about both covers is the "The Killers" typeface. While it lokos quite classic in terms of structure, the use of the dot structure gives it a sense of freshess and trendiness. In the second cover, they used a honeycomb/mosaic kind of texture, the purple colours used are quite subtle and calm, while the yellow contrasts the subtleness with a hint of energy, much like their songs.
